The Price of Free Online Games

Free online games are not Free.

I say this statement based on my experience. They cost something, and they often cost more than you ever imagine.

I’m no scientist, and I’m definitely no economist. But what I am is a rational man (most of the time).

Here are some things I want to say about these free games floating around the internet and in mobile devices.

Free online games cost you time.

Free games can eat up a lot of your time and lessen productivity. It will take you longer to do a task because time for free games eats up time for work. The worst thing about this is some or should I say most people are playing their games during office hours. Farmville, Pet society and all those Facebook games look innocent, but are actually time vacuums. I recently read in the news that companies have banned Facebook in company networks to stop their employees from playing online games specifically in the Facebook website.

Free online games use up electricity.

It will eat up your phone’s, tablet’s or laptop’s batteries making you charge more often. Charging your batteries more often uses more electricity, resulting to higher electricity bill. The same applies for desktop computers.

Free online games can kill your real-life relationships.

As you get more addicted to free games, you may use up time you can spend bonding with love ones or physically interacting with real-life people. Some will counter this by saying that friendships are born out of being connected to other players online. I wouldn’t term those connection as friendship. Would those people help you if you have a problem in real life? Could they give you the same comfort as a real hug would?

I’ve even heard of persons forming romantic relationships with their online buddies and end up leaving their real-life partners. Just pathetic.

Free online games cost you money.

Even if the online games are free to join, the cost of internet access and maintenance of your electronic devices is still there. In some games, if you want to upgrade your characters or access special levels, you need to purchase items and level-ups through online transactions or buying prepaid credits from retailers.

It’s been a topic of many TV shows already: a lot of school kids are spending lunch money just to play in internet shops. Students skip classes just to spend money paying for internet access outside of their homes. There’s no surprise internet shops are popping up everywhere, especially near schools.

Free online games are fun to play but you should be aware of the effects of spending too much time with them. If you’re not careful, free online games can cost you more than you expected.

The Rise of Multiplayer Mobile Games

With the increasing popularity of mobile games, more options are becoming readily available for users. Multiplayer games have already been a huge success on consoles and PCs. Now, their numbers are increasing for mobile devices as well. Technology such as Bluetooth and 3G allows more and more players to connect and enjoy some friendly competition.

One reason why this type of game has been so effective is that mobile users like to stay connected to others via their devices. These socially minded people are much more likely to engage in gameplay that allows them to interact with other players instead of opting for single player options. Rather than challenging a generic computer opponent, they’re able to test their skills against other people.

Multiplayer games do not have the same diversity as single player games, but there are quite a few options available. Some of the most popular multiplayer games have a gambling theme, such as blackjack or poker. Others feature well-known classic games such as Checkers or Chess. Many of these multiplayer games are often based on console or PC games. The themes and gameplay for these mobile games offer similar, yet scaled down versions. However, with most game companies targeting casual gamers instead of hardcore gamers, the lack of high-quality graphics has not been as much of an issue. Also, the focus on casual gamers gives game companies a wider net to cast when promoting their products.

As mentioned earlier, technology has also been an important factor in popularizing multiplayer games. The earliest versions of multiplayer games only allowed two players to compete due to the limits of Infra Red technology. Thanks to 3G, it’s now possible for large numbers of people to participate in these games. Although Bluetooth does not have the same capacity as 3G in terms of numbers, it does allow a handful of people to play at the same time. With the improvement of technology, the demand for multiplayer games has increased accordingly.

The latest trend in multiplayer mobile games is the development of MMORPGs, or massively multiplayer online role-playing games. TibiaME, made by CipSoft, was the first of these to be released. This real time game allows you to explore and fight your way through the world of Tibia. Much like Blizzard’s highly popular World of Warcraft game, you can team up with others to perform quests or fight them in PVP, or Player vs. Player, mode.

Recently, Smart Cell Technology was developing a mobile version of the PC game Shadow of Legend. This game would have many similar features as TibiaME, along with some improvements. If it is completed, it will be the first cross-platform game to allow gamers to share the same account on their PC and mobile device. Due to a problem with 3D graphics, however, development has been suspended for the mobile version.

Multiplayer mobile games have come a long way from the original 1 to 1 player ratio. Being able to compete against several other players has given people the chance to interact more and enjoy a greater sense of satisfaction when defeating opponents. Multiplayer games are providing mobile users with another reason to stay connected and another way to get the most enjoyment out of their mobile devices. As demand continues to grow and improvements continue to be made, the popularity and quality of these games will continue to rise.

Flying The Skies With Flight Simulation Games

I’ve never taken flight lessons. I’ll never become a real pilot. Yet from the comfort of my couch, I’m able to fly through the blue skies, pulling up the throttle and making loops. Flight simulation games are a great way to learn to fly a plane, whether you are doing it for sheer enjoyment or because it’s something that you’re looking at doing for a living.

Playstation, Xbox and Nintendo all manufacture flight simulation games. Some even have special controllers, just like the steering wheels for racing games. It’s a very realistic feel, especially when there’s a large scale television to stare into, allowing me more room to soar through the sky and learn to stick my landing. Many of the games allow me to choose the kind of plane that I want to pilot for the day. I’ll be able to fly WWII fighter jets, Cessnas, floatplanes, and even an Airbus.

Some of the games allow a better feel of actually piloting a plane whereas others focus on simply flying. I prefer the ones where I can feel like I’m sitting in the cockpit with full access of the controls.

No matter the plane, I’ll be able to pick from a variety of backgrounds and scenarios to fly into. I can fly over Germany, France, New York or simply a blue sky. I can fly in rain or shine, or into enemy fire. There’s a flight simulation game for everyone. I like to change it up a little bit. I can take my aggression out on the Germans in a WWII simulation game and tease my flights of fantasy by flying into outer space and checking out other galaxies.

Flight simulation games have gained in popularity. They were originally designed for flight schools to allow students to learn the basics in flight before going up in a real plane where the ability to crash was a lot more real. As a result of flight schools wanting to make a strong learning platform, I’ve got a great game to play whenever I want. And best of all, I don’t have to pay for jet fuel!

There are a variety of flight simulation games on the market, all allowing me to play a little different. I can fly for the sake of flying. I can learn how to do barrel rolls and other aerobatics. Or I can fly combat style, shooting enemy planes while maneuvering my plane through open fire. All of these are great ways of entertaining myself, but it may provide for a practical application one day. You never know – I could be on a plane and the pilot may be injured. With my expertise on the video game console, I may be able to pilot a real plane in a crisis situation!
